Rings Unique specializes in custom wedding rings for women and men, usually crafting a totally new ring exactly to customer wishes. Recently, however, we were excited to use a man’s vintage ring from his Grandfather to set in a new contemporary metal. In this project, we were able to use the entire donor ring as the centerpiece in a Damascus stainless steel wedding band. With two different finger sizes to accommodate, the old and the new ring, this was a complex project. But with careful work, we were able to complete the new ring perfectly. This may be the most memorable man’s wedding rings ever.
What qualifies as a vintage wedding ring for a man? Does it have to be a certain age? How about design? What about the maker? Well, all of these factors as well as many more would come into play when deciding on using a vintage wedding ring for a man. Most of all, however, it is the history of the ring and the sentiment of the man wishing to use it.
In our case, the gentleman’s Grandfather was deceased and his own Father could not wear the ring, it was too small. But, by itself, it was too big for our customer. Then the idea developed to use it for the centerpiece of a new “Alternative” metal ring. Alternative metal means non-precious, usually Damascus steel, Cobalt Chrome, Titanium, Tungsten, Black Zirconium and a few others. But, only one of these has the innate mixed metal folds evident in Damascus steel. It was the perfect answer. With some imagination and hard work, we were able to create the Damascus with a grooved center into which we snugged the vintage ring. No adjustments were ever made to the vintage ring. It was magical.
Damascus steel derives from centuries old metalsmithing techniques believed to have originated in the Middle East. Two types of Stainless Steel are twisted and folded by hand to produce vivid patterns making each Damascus Steel ring a unique masterpiece.
